This hand specimen intrigues me a bit. At first, I thought that the crysals that are so obvious were actually made of Mimetite. However, some close examination and a tiny drop of hydrochloric acid caused me to change my mind. The Mimetite of this specimen really acts as a base off of which a thin druse of tiny calcite crytstals grows. The Mimetite is massive and has an obviously botryoidal form. It shows a dull yellow-orange color with a hint of brown, has a dull pearly-to-waxy luster, and is dimly translucent. The calcites that cover it are very small, not exceeding a few millimeters in a
