The violet-to-green (color changing) gemstone Alexandrite (a variety of chrysoberyl) is the Birthstone for June. It is also the modern Zodiac stone for the constellation of Gemini, and is a gemstone for the 45th and 55th Anniversaries.
Alexandrite has the unusual characteristic that it takes on different colors according to the source of the light illuminating it. With warm lighting such as incandescent bulbs, it appears violet to purple. Under fluorescent light (or sometimes sunlight), it may appear green. Different specimens may react differently to different lights, and other tones are sometimes seen, especially under sunlight or fluorescent lights. Most alexandrite in jewelry is lab-grown, and the color change may be different, and is often more pronounced.
